Have you ever wanted to eat vegan food and drink vegan beer, surrounded by hand-drawn images of cats? Then you have come to the right place!

Cat Bar is a bar in El Born district of Barcelona that serves delicious burgers, sandwhiches and potato wedges with mayo: all vegan! They have a daily gluten free option up on the chalk board and refreshing vegan craft beer on tap, the perfect combination for a pit stop as you walk through the city.

The bar doesn’t actually have any cats in; it was called Cat Bar after the owner’s daughter, Cat! But in amongst the punky leatherette chairs, skate stickers and brickwork style bar, you will find dozens of cat images, some of which are easy to pick out like illustrations, and others which are more artistic, like the cat clock face!

It feels a little like being in the Studio Ghibli film ‘The Cat Returns‘, or a modern punky ‘Alice in Wonderland’! 🙂

To the food! We ordered a vegan (of course!) burger with chunky wedges, lets start with that one. The burger was massive and came with some potato wedges sprinkled with paprika, tomato brava sauce and some vegan mayo. Thumbs up for this one!

Next up, I ordered for me the gluten free special of the day, vegan fish and chips made with tofu and seaweed. It came with a delicious vegetable purée soup which was nice and warming, and was topped with mushrooms, spinach, olive oil and seeds.

The fish and chips themselves were really innovative, I had never tried anything like it before: the ‘fish’ was tofu, which had been wrapped in seaweed and then deep fried in tempura batter. The result was crispy and salty, and was a very good imitation fish. It went well with the bed of salad and the paprika chips, and a glass of white wine : )

The staff were lovely and smiley, and we had a little chat with one of the people that worked there who was English as he set up one of the vegan craft beers. If you’re really lucky and go on the right day, you might meet one of the staff’s very shy but affectionate dog, who was very proccupied with following his/her owner and generally being adorable! : )

If you like homely vegan food that is not just rice and beans, visit Cat Bar. Sometimes you just want to get your teeth into a burger and chips!
